What is BOTOX?

Repetitive muscle action in the face may cause wrinkles, typically in the forehead, between the brows, and at the sides of the eyes (smile lines/crow’s feet). BOTOX weakens muscle action, smoothing the wrinkles. Additionally, with the weakening of specific muscles, those muscles with opposing action become stronger, so treatment of crow’s feet will not only smooth wrinkles on the sides of the eye. Still, it will also lift the tail of the brow. BOTOX is composed of Botulinum, which is the active ingredient that weakens muscle action.

Who is a Good Candidate for BOTOX in Baltimore?

Good candidates are men and women in their 20’s and older who are looking to reduce facial wrinkles and creases. Other applications beyond treating the brow and around the eyes include reversal of downturned corners of the mouth and neckbands. All clients should be in good physical and mental health, with realistic expectations for improvement rather than perfection.

During the initial consultation, you will discuss with Dr. Shermak what you would like to improve so she can understand your expectations and determine how to achieve your desired result best. At that visit, the treatment may take place. A second treatment is recommended 4 to 6 months later to achieve optimal results.

What is the Recovery Like After BOTOX?

For 24 hours, the area treated should not be rubbed or massaged and bending over needs to be avoided (exercise, gardening, cleaning floors) to avoid migration of the product. Regular exercise and activities may be resumed by the following day. Some clients bruise with treatment, particularly at the side of the eyes, but this will resolve quickly and be helped by taking Arnica tablets.

How long do the results of BOTOX last?

On average, your improvement will continue for around 3-4 months, at which time you can elect to repeat the treatment with Dr. Shermak.

Is the procedure painful?

If you have ever tweezed an eyelash or eyebrow hair, then you are well-prepared for the discomfort level associated with the BOTOX procedure. Dr. Shermak is extremely gentle and provides a numbing agent that makes the injection virtually painless. Most find it’s over before they even know it happened.

Is treatment with BOTOX covered by insurance?

Unfortunately, procedures performed for strictly cosmetic reasons often don’t get approved by medical insurance carriers. However, if you are undergoing BOTOX treatment for medical purposes such as migraine headaches, there may be an opportunity for reimbursement. Check with your carrier to learn more.

Is there any downside to the treatment?

The only downside comes when BOTOX injections are performed by someone without adequate professional experience and certification, as sometimes happens in unregulated med spas. While it is a simple procedure, administering BOTOX requires a high degree of precision and artistry. It should only be attempted by a board-certified plastic surgeon such as Baltimore’s Dr. Shermak. This prevents unwanted side effects and points towards a final result that appears both beautiful and natural.
