It is so interesting. There’s an urban tale floating around that breast implants last for 10 years, and those with implants should consult with a plastic surgeon 10 years out from their augmentation to plan next steps. Ten years? There is no scientific data to back up this information. On looking at the number alone, I always think: what a round number, so perfect.

In considering the life span of breast implants I share with my patients breast implant companies like Mentor and Allergan are absolutely obsessive about the quality of manufacturing implants. About 5 years ago Mentor recalled all their saline implants because the stamp that identifies implant volume was a little off center and there was concern this could create a vulnerability in the integrity of the implant shell. No implants actually were reported to have been damaged by this stamping flaw. Mentor company was just super proactive about it. Further, all the companies warranty their implants 100% for at least 3 years. If an implant needs to be replaced, all of the costs associated with implant replacement are covered. And if a different sized implant is desired in the revision, fine. And if the opposite implant needs to be replaced as a result to keep things symmetrical, also fine! The companies are obsessive over the perfection of their implants, both saline and silicone gel.

So what do I tell my patients? I tell them that I would expect their implants to last 20-25 years. I tell them that saline implant durability is not quite as good as silicone gel implant integrity. I tell them that every now and then, there is an implant with a problem, but usually, that is identifiable within a year, and replacement will be 100% covered. Patients should come in for evaluation if they note a change in shape, tightness, volume, symmetry or become more aware of the implant. This may be a sign that the implant is wearing. That may be the time to replace the implant.

And certainly many women experience body image transitions over time: an implant that was perfect in a woman’s 20’s may not fit her 40’s lifestyle or aesthetic goals – for example. So the implants can be removed, replaced, with or without ancillary procedures like a breast lift or liposuction and fat transfer. And a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons is the safest, most well equipped provider to service breast implant revision needs. Much of my practice is rooted in revising breast augmentation surgery, and I really enjoy this satisfied group of patients!
