Further Specialization
After completing her plastic surgery training, Dr. Shermak went on to pursue further specialized training in aesthetic, breast, and body contouring surgery in Nashville with Dr. G. Patrick Maxwell and Dr. Jack Fisher.
During this time, she learned the latest techniques in body sculpting, including liposuction and body lifts; breast surgery, including primary and complex cosmetic and reconstructive procedures; and facial rejuvenation surgery, including laser resurfacing, facial peels, endoscopic surgery, and facelifts. She now practices privately as a plastic surgeon in Baltimore.
Dr. Shermak’s Accomplishments
Dr. Shermak has become nationally known for her work with breast and body-lifting procedures and her work with post-pregnancy and massive weight loss patients. She presents at national and international meetings and has authored many publications in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery, such as textbooks, scientific journal articles, and podium speeches, defining her as a leader in the plastic surgery world. The culmination of all of this work was evidenced by the launch of Dr. Shermak’s surgical atlas focusing on breast and body contouring surgery, published by McGraw Hill in New York in 2010.
After a tenure of 22 years at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, during which time she served as chief of plastic surgery at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Dr. Shermak transitioned into private practice in Lutherville, MD, and is today known as one of the best plastic surgeons in the Baltimore, Maryland area. She has been named a “Top Doc” in plastic surgery for multiple years by Baltimore Magazine and remains on their part-time faculty while also maintaining her academic affiliation with Johns Hopkins School of Medicine to continue on with her interests in teaching and research.
In 2017 and 2018, Dr. Shermak was a visiting professor for the national plastic surgery society (ASPS) educational arm, the Plastic Surgery Foundation (PSF). During this time, she visited plastic surgery residency training programs throughout the United States and lectured on body contouring, perioperative safety, and the optimization of surgical outcomes. Dr. Shermak also served as the head of the Cosmetic Surgery program for the annual ASPS meeting.
